Reintegrating The Alabama Army National Guard Into The Workforce

In conjunction with Mercedes-Benz U.S. International (MBUSI), West AlabamaWorks! (WAW) hosted Major General Sheryl Gordon from the Alabama Army National Guard (ALNG) along with her team. The meeting was a giant leap forward in the The Adjutant General’s (TAGs) vision to enhance the quality of life of our Soldiers and Airmen in the Alabama National Guard.
There are over 50,000 military personnel returning to civilian life each year. Over the last 5 years, under the TAGs direction, Major General’s staff has been exploring avenues and developing incremental processes that would bring them closer to the realization of an employment network connected to not only other state resources, but interconnected with industry throughout the state too.
The ALNG’s meeting with WAW Executive Director Donny Jones, President Jason Hoff and Wade Smith from Mercedes-Benz U.S. International, was the catalyst that the ALNG believes can propel our citizen soldiers and airmen out of the shadows of unemployment and underemployment into the forefront of high-tech industry and high wage jobs, not only in West Alabama, but throughout the entire state that our military heroes so richly deserve.
The Alabama Community College System and West AlabamaWorks has worked to create a MSSC Fast Track which will quickly move military veterans and National Guard candidates into training and jobs. We are also working on a strategy to reach out and recruit returning veterans in the southeast to move to West Alabama during their reentry training.
