Students look for jobs at West Alabama Works Event

TUSCALOOSA, AL (WBRC) - West Alabama Works organized an event where dozens of companies are to looking to fill positions with qualified employees.

No sports were played inside the gym at Tuscaloosa’s Shelton State Community College Tuesday. Instead, students competed for job.

“We didn’t have this opportunity two years ago when I first got to high school. But it’s a really good opportunity," Beerikka Beville explained.

She was one of more than 600 students who registered to interview for part time and full time jobs from dozens of companies represented here.

“I did mock interviews at my school, Northridge High School. Anquetta Shealy, she’s a very good teacher, she told us how to do our resume’, cover letter, how to dress, speak loud and other things,” Beville continued.

Interviews were open to high school seniors and post-secondary students in Tuscaloosa and eight other West Alabama counties.

“Students will be able to come in, interview, be able to get employment before they ever graduate from high school. That’s really what it’s all about,” according to Donny Jones, Executive Director of West Alabama Works.

Chris Jacobs came to represent a company that installs and services conveyor belts.

They wanted to hire 8 to 10 people for several jobs.

“We need good, young help that wants to come to work and make money,” Jacobs added.

Students like Beville are determined to find a job

"I’m very excited, nervous. But my goal is not to leave here without a job,” Beville expressed.
