Diversity summit helps businesses honor diverse voices

The Chamber of Commerce of West Alabama held its ninth annual diversity summit, titled “Diversity is Now.” 

Mental health advocate, professor and diversity, equity and inclusion consultant Dr. Nadia Richardson was the keynote speaker.

The message she shared during Thursday’s event centered around making diversity training more relevant to modern day issues. 

“If we can help people to see themselves in it, and also give them a role, an actionable role, a way they can contribute to the efforts then you’ll get that buy in. A part of that role and a part of what it takes to make it actionable is to not be afraid to have difficult conversations,” said Richardson. 

Participants also learned how to structure intentional DEI initiatives, inspire team buy-in, create a culture of transparency and encourage a company commitment to life-long learning. 

This was a discussion that business owners appreciated. 

“We have different people from different backgrounds who work in our company,” said Marleshia Hall, co-owner of Poppin’ Sisters. “Bringing in people who can assist and help us to be successful is important.”
